Update: Gna’s been replaced
I’ve been playing with the reborn Gna for a couple of days now. Warnings that I received about the low battery life seem to have no reason so far. Two days of operations including Bluetooth being active most (if not all) of the time, several not too short WiFi browsing sessions and some application installations over Bluetooth didn’t run down the battery, so I figure this shouldn’t be an issue. Synchronization with Lotus Notes (so far, R5) works as expected. LN7 will be up sometime in the next months. The WiFi does absolutely rock. Despite the small display resolution, the Opera browser does a pretty good job of fitting the pages on the screen in a usable manner. And with wifi bandwidth, Mobile GMaps or the original Google Maps Mobile are neat tools as well. Mobile GMaps seems to be a little easier in handling at start, the original has some more features such as searching for an address instead of coordinates and compiling directions from one address to another.
What seems to be an issue though is application availability. Since the P990 runs UIQ3 as compared to UIQ 2.1 on the predecessor on the P910i, I cannot simply install the same applications in the same version I used before. Tracker seems to be no longer under development, so I have to say good-bye to my favorite application launcher. WorldMate seems to be no longer available in the standard edition and I’m not yet sure whether the Pro version is worth $70. SMan is neat tool, I mostly used the task manager though and that is now built in into UIQ3, so I don’t miss SMan that much.
The built in RSS Reader also seems to have an issue. While it perfectly reads vowe’s feed and SpiegelOnline’s feed, it chokes on both my comments feed and my regular feed. I can see, why it chokes on heise’s feed, since that’s an Atom feed and the application seems to read only RSS (hence the name). That’s not exactly a powerful feedreader, but hey, you get what you pay for and this one’s for free (i.e. it comes with the phone).
How does it compare to the P910 in sense of speed?

Sometimes I have the impression that the 990 is slower than the 910. Boot time definitely is longer on the 990. Some apps (e.g. WorldMate which I have purchased on a 50% rebate in the meantime) seem to be a bit slower than on the 910, but it’s different version of the software also, so I can’t tell exactly why it seems to be slower. It could also be WorldMate itself… Tracker seemed to be a bit faster in switching the screens (today vs. icons), but again, the built-in screens are a different product. Nonetheless, the user experience is a bit slower, I’d say. However, on the web there are some tweaks how to speed up the UIQ 3 GUI which seems to be the part that’s slowing down the thing.
